Holland

Holland is a nation that is well known for its open and gritty spirit. Modern Dutch enjoy the fruits of predecessors, their own intelligence and industry.

Amsterdam contains many famous museums, such as the Rijks museum which is dedicated to the art of Vincent Van Gogh, and the National Museum where each year more than one million visitors admire the masterpieces of 17th century Dutch art.

Leaving the metropolitan area, which unites the great Dutch centers from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, you enter another world, made up of windmills and canals, of dikes and dams, of lands wrenched from the sea. Here farmers, engineers, ruddy-faced men, and lace-clad women modeled the landscape like clay, transformed a hostile environment into a colorful scene from a fairytale.

Like the beavers, the Dutch are great builders of dams. 27% of the Dutch territory lies below the sea level. Over the centuries it was protected by dikes and later drained, making the land cultivable and habitable.

"God created the earth but left the Dutch the task of creating Holland." Thus goes a local saying, proof of the struggle to reclaim the territory, which is situated against the sea. This challenge has been tried by the ranks of men who over the centuries, tried to create new strips of land to cultivate, in order to survive.

The Dutch windmills, which once numbered more than ten thousand, were replaced by the advent of new pumping systems.

Nowadays Holland is the third largest producer in the world of agricultural foodstuffs. And two thirds of its territory is given over to agriculture.

The city of Haarlem is considered the world´s tulip capital. Besides for its role in the world market for this product, this city is also famous for the passion it reserves for adorning its narrow streets with flowers of various colors and different species, thus resulting in its name as the city of flowers.

Haarlem is a real city, which has little to do with provincial Holland, it is a city that really belongs to the Rndstad. And yet its flower markets, with the boxes of tulips on display on every street give it a less metropolitan air.

The village of Volendam, in the Waterland, is surely one of the most picturesque areas in Holland. It is no coincidence that it was in this village where 19th century artists came to portray Holland in its natural form- minute and provincial with clogs, bonnets and girls with red cheeks.

Many of these pictures can still be admired today inside this old hotel, the Spaandor Hotel. In fact, the penniless 19th century painters often paid for their stay with their own artwork.

Nowadays in Volendam it is the cameras that immortalize the traditional Holland. The town combines the typical wooden fishing buildings with the costumes of popular tradition.

Colour is also the dominant feature in fishing, both in regards to the paint on the boats and most importantly in regards to the great market on Saturday afternoon. The boats unload the fish which are mainly herrings and eels caught from the Ijsselmeer in Volendam, mainly herrings and eels.

In Marken you can admire the typical houses, painted in green and black. The interiors of these buildings are particularly unusual, characterized by an almost obsessive tidiness, and also by lacework and by an abundance of ornaments.

The inhabitants of Marken, unlike the Catholics of nearby Volendam, are Protestants, but similarly they also honor feast days with the beautiful traditional costumes.
